The Island Internists was founded in 1991 by Dr. Donna Seminara  with the vision of creating an Internal Medicine and Geriatric medical practice that treats every medical patient with dignity and first-rate care. The Physicans and office staff at Island Internists are highly-trained and exceptionally friendly. We understand that for many, visiting a medical doctor can be a stressful experience. Donna Semianra, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Donna Seminara, MD co-founded the medical practice of Island Internists in August of 1991, and is proud to have served thousands of families in Staten Island, sometimes over multiple generations, as their Primary Care Physicians.  Although involved in many academic and advocacy positions, she identifies herself first and foremost as a Practicing Clinician.  She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, and has re-certified each of these credentials.

Since graduating from residency training at Staten Island University Hospital, she has been closely affiliated with that institution.  She was a former Co-Director for the Center for Women’s Health and since 2002 has served as Director of the Division of Geriatrics. 

Since 2007 she has been Director of the Geriatric Fellowship Program as well.  She  has been elected to represent fellow Physicians on the Hospital’s Medical Executive Committee, and starting in the summer of 2011,  will begin a two year term as the first female  President of the Medical and Dental Staff at Staten Island University Hospital.  Three to five times weekly Dr. Seminara can be found rounding on her patients admitted to Staten University Hospital’s North Campus.

Dr. Seminara has also been involved in founding and developing one of New York City’s largest medical Home Visit Programs through the Division of Geriatrics.  More than one thousand annual Physician visits are conducted by this program.  She also sees patients from her own practice in a home visit program within her private practice.  One of her clinical and advocacy interests is in the support of caregivers for homebound patients.

Dr. Seminara has served as President of Richmond County Medical Society, NY American College of Physicians Staten Island District President (2006-2011) and has just been elected Counselor of NYACP Staten Island.  She has been acknowledged with numerous awards including “the Staten Island Professional and Business Women’s Association".

 

   

Larisa Malisova , D.O., F.A.C.P. ,

Dr. Larisa Malisova immigrated from Russia to the United States with her family in 1998.  She graduated from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002,  and then proceeded to complete an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital.   Additionally, she furthered her studies there by completing a medical fellowship in Geriatric Medicine in 2006.  She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.  She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and member of the American Geriatric Society. 

She is an attending Physician at multiple Skilled Nursing Facilities including Clove Lakes Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and Staten Island Care Center.  Furthermore, she has privileges as an attending Physician in Ambulatory Care at Staten Island University Hospital, and is an active member of the Division of Geriatrics at Staten Island University Hospital where she supervises six monthly Geriatrics Clinics.  She has been a member of the medical practice since 2006

Fluent in Russian and English, she resides in Brooklyn with her husband and 3 children.

 

 

  

John Maese, M.D., F.A.C.P. , F.A.C.E.P., F.H.I.M.S.S.

Dr. Maese has been in medical practice on Staten Island for more than twenty years.  He received his medical degree from SUNY-Downstate.  He is one of a few physicians on Staten Island that are triple boarded. He is board certified in a number of clinical specialties including Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Emergency Medicine.  He is also certified by the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians.  Dr. Maese holds an academic appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at SUNY-Downstate.  He was the first Governor of the American College of Physicians representing New York State from Staten Island. Dr. Maese has won many awards both for  academic and volunteer work. Dr. Maese is a Fellow of American College of Emergency Physicians and The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.  In 2006 he was recognized by the Staten Island Advance as a “Doctor of Vision” singled out for his efforts in technology and medicine. In 2007 The Academy of Medicine in Richmond was given the Annual Physician Recognition Award for Service to the Community. In 2011 Dr. Maese became only the second Internist on Staten Island to be elected to Mastership in the American College of Physicians since 1923. Physicians who are chosen for Mastership are a small select group of Fellows who have been selected because of “personal character, positions of honor, contributions toward furthering the purposes of the ACP, eminence in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.”

He serves as a medical consultant to health insurance industry, and to private practices in the application of Health Information Technology and performance improvement strategies.  He serves as Chairperson of the New York State Patient Safety Enhancement Project Committee as well as on the Executive Committee of the New York Quality Alliance. He is Chairperson of the New York Chapter ACP HIT Committee and the National ACP Volunteer Committee.  He is past president of the Richmond County Medical Society and served more than 7 years as the Staten Island board member to the largest Public Health system in the country the New York City, Health and Hospital Corporation.  Dr. Maese is a champion of organizations and charities related to autism.
